What is a face fit test?
If you must wear a tight-fitting respirator, a face fit test helps to ensure the chosen mask fits correctly and provides adequate protection. If you have more than one type of mask, each type should be fit tested.
Employers are legally required to carry out face fit testing for all employees who wear tight-fitting respirators.
Different methods include quantitative and qualitative testing. Quantitative testing is the fastest way to reliably fit test any tight-fitting respirator - this method uses a portacount machine which detects the number of airborne particles passing through the seal of a mask. The qualitative method, also known as the hood test, works by spraying a sweet or bitter solution into the hood - if the wearer doesn't detect the taste the mask is deemed to provide an adequate fit.
Can I have a face fit test with facial hair?
We strongly advise that individuals are clean shaven before a face fit test or when they're wearing tight fitting respiratory protective equipment (RPE).
For masks to be effective, they rely on a good seal against the face. Facial hair, including stubble and beards, make it impossible for a mask to get a good seal against the face and can lead to gaps. Any gaps in the seal can put the wearer at risk of breathing in contaminated air.
If the wearer does not want to be clean shaven, e.g. for religious reasons, alternative forms of RPE that do not require a tight fit to the face are available.
